When considering retirement, most people simply flick through the holiday magazines, test drive a classic car or visit the golf course.
75-year-old Patrick Kennedy is no such man – In fact the mild mannered pensioner has just become Australia’s oldest Taekwondo black belt!
Patrick was looking to take up a ‘quiet and peaceful’ hobby during his retirement when he contacted the Brisbane Taekwondo Centre three years ago.
‘They suggested pilates… I stuck with that for a while but it wasn’t for me.” he said.
It took just 3 years for Patrick to secure the sports ultimate honour – a testament to his hard work and dedication. Patrick was put through his paces in a final exam that required him to break boards with both his hands and feet and fending off a 3-man attack.
“It has been fantastic. I am tickled pink,” Mr Kennedy said. “I am feeling the fittest I have ever felt. My wife (Bernece) says it has done my ego plenty of good.”
Head instructor Adam Wilson said Mr Kennedy was not given any special treatment and sparring partners 55 years his junior. “He’ll get in there and spar with the 20-year-olds and give them a hard time,” he said.
